Conjunctions ЧТО [SHTO] and ЧТОБЫ [SHTÓBY]

There are two conjunctions in the Russian language, ЧТО [shto] and ЧТОБЫ [shtóby]. Using them in a wrong way can change the meaning of the whole sentence.

ЧТО [shto]


This conjunction is used for a giving information or someone’s thought, opinion. Verb’s form can be in present, past or in future tenses depend on meaning of this sentence:

Information
Я сказала сестре, что собираюсь в отпуск. [Ya skazála sister, shto sabiráyus′ v ótpusk.] – I told my sister, that I was going on vacation.
Я сказала моему сыну, что он хорошо сделал домашнее задание. [Ya skazála mayimú sýnu, shto on kharashó zdélal damáshniye zadániye.] – I told my son he’s done well his homework.

Opinion
Я думаю, что сдам экзамен успешно. [Ya dúmayu, shto sdam ikzámin uspéshno.] – I think, that I’ll pass an exam successfully.

ЧТОБЫ [shtóby]


This conjunction is used for an expression of request, task (order) and wish (reluctance). The verb’s form can be only in past tense, although we are talking about future time and events:

Wish
Я хочу, чтобы моя сестра поехала со мной в отпуск. [Ya khachú, shóby mayá payékhala sa mnoj v ótpusk.] – I want my sister to go with me on vacation.
Я хочу, чтобы мой экзамен был сдан успешно. [Ya khachú, shóby moj ikzámin byl zdan uspéshno.] – I want to pass my exam successfully.

Task
Я сказала моему сыну, чтобы он сделал уроки. [Ya skazála mayimú sýnu, shtóby on zdélal uróki.] – I told my son to do his homework.
