11 апреля 1857 года император Александр II утвердил герб Российской империи, который представлял собой двуглавого орла. Этот герб просуществовал до 1917 года. В 1917 году все знаки отличия, в том числе герб, были упразднены специальным декретом. Двуглавый орел вернулся только в 1993 году, когда Указом Президента был введен новый государственный герб – двуглавый орел, рисунок которого был выполнен на основе герба Российской империи.
On April 11, 1857 the emperor Alexander II has approved the coat of arms of the Russian Empire which represented a two-headed eagle. This coat of arms has existed till 1917. In 1917 all distinctions, including the coat of arms, have been abolished by the special decree. The two-headed eagle has returned only in 1993 when the Decree of the President has entered the new State Emblem - a two-headed eagle whose drawing has been executed on the basis of the coat of arms of the Russian Empire.
