Самые крупные опалы различного цвета добыты в австралийских месторождениях. Наибольший из них имел массу пять тысяч двести семьдесят граммов. Очень крупные опалы можно также найти в Бразилии. В ювелирном деле используют преимущественно так называемые благородные опалы. Считается, что опал лечит различные инфекции и болезни сердца.
