В июле 1965 года благодаря космическому аппарату Маринер-4 были впервые обнаружены кратеры на поверхности Марса. Фотографии кратеров были сделаны камерами космического аппарата во время близкого пролёта вблизи Красной Планеты 14-15 июля, а затем были отправлены на Землю.
