Горячий шоколад готовят из растопленного плиточного шоколада или шоколадной стружки исключительно на молоке с добавлением ванили, сахара, и корицы. Затем горячий напиток взбивается. До XIX века жидкий шоколад использовался в медицинских целях и нередко продавался в аптеках.
