Hawberry (Crataegus) is a shrub or a small tree, mostly growing to 5–15 metres with small pome fruit. The fruits of the hawthorn are edible but the flavour is comparable to over-ripe apples. They are sometimes used to make a jelly or homemade wine. The young leaves may be used in salads. Several species of hawthorn are used in traditional medicine. This plant is believed to strengthen cardiovascular function.
