Feautures use of interrogative words

In the Russian language there is a group of interrogative words similar in meaning, but with slight differences. Let’s have a look at them at example:

1. Where?(Где?), Where to? (Куда?), Where from? (Откуда?)

• Where? (Где?) Is used when referring of an object or person location. 
  

Где живёт моя сестра? [Gde zhivyót mayá sistrá?]-Where does my sister live? Моя сестра живёт в Туле. [Mayá sistrá zhivyót v Túli]-My sister lives in Tula.
Где находится этот музей? [Gde nakhóditsa état muzéj?]-Where is situated this museum?

• Where to? (Куда?) Is used in movement direction. In response, the noun is in the accusative case with prepositions in (в), on (на). 
  

Куда ты идёшь? [Kudá ty idyósh′?]-Where are you going? Я иду в спортзал. [Ya idú v spórtzal.]-I’m goingto the gym. Я иду на стадион. [Ya idú na stadión]-I’m going to the stadium.

• Where from? (Откуда?) Is used in movement direction. In response, the noun is in the genitive case with prepositions from (из, от). 
  

Откуда вы едете? [Otkúda vy yéditi?]-Where are you coming back from? Я еду от моей тёти. [Ya yédu atmayéj tyóti.]- I'm coming back from my aunt. Я еду из местного супермаркета. [Ya yédu iz mésnava supirmárkita]-I’m coming back from a local supermarket.

2. Why? (Почему?), For what purpose? ( Зачем?)

• Why? (Почему?) Is used to determine the cause of the action. 
  

Почему Полина не ходит в школу? [Pachimú Palína ni khódit v shkólu?]-Why doesn’t Polina go to school?Она больна. [Ana bal′ná.]-She is sick.

• For what case? (Зачем?) Is used to determine the purpose of the action, the reason of it, who needs it for. Italso can be used to express disapproval, disagreement. 
  

Зачем Дима поступил в Художественную Академию? [Zachém Díma pastupíl v KhudózhestvenuyuAkadémiyu?]-For what case did Dima entered The Art Academy? Он хочет стать профессиональным художником и открыть свою собственную картинную галерею. [On khóchit stat′ profisianál′nym khudózhnikam i atkrýt′ svajú sóbstvinuyu kartínuyu galiréyu.]-He wants to become a professional artist and open his own picture gallery.

Зачем ты не взял зонт? [Zachém ty ni vzyal zont?]-Why didn’t you take an umbrella? Теперь ты промокпод дождём. [Tipér′ ty pramók pad dazhdyóm.]-Now you’ve got wet in the rain.

IT IS IMPORTANT! Interrogative word «why?» («почему?») can use as a synonym of the word «for what purpose?» («зачем?»).
Почему ты живёшь в столице? [Pachimú ty zhivyósh′ v stalítsi?]-Why do you live in the capital?
Зачем ты живёшь в столице? [Zachém ty zhivyósh′ v stalítsi?]-For what case do you live in the capital?


3. What? (Какой?), Which? (Который?)

• What? (Какой?) Is used to determine the quality and subject property or a person. 
  

Какой хвост у белки? [Kakój khvost u bélki?]-What is the tail of a squirrel? Он длинный и пушистый. [On dlínyj i pushýstyj.]-It is long and fluffy.

• Which? (Который?) Is used in the choice from variety, and in the time questions. 
  

Который сейчас час? [Katóryj sijchás chas?]-What time is it now?
Который из этих двух поездов на Ростов? [Katóryj iz étikh dvukh paizdóv na Rastóv.]-Which of these two trains is to Rostov?
