Subordinate relation

As you know, words in Russian depend on each other and the forms of subordinate words are changed according to the forms of head-words. There are different types of semantic relations between words. In this article we give consideration to the subordinate relation which has this name because one word in a word-combination is subordinated to another one, changing its own grammar form. Here are the ways of subordinate relations.

1. Coordination
This is the type of relations, when subordinate word is changed, having the same gender, case and number as a head-word. A subordinate word is usually an adjective, a pronoun acting like adjective, an ordinal numeral, and a head-word is often a noun.

Высокий дом - A high building.
Увлекательное путешествие - An exciting trip.
Второй ребёнок - The second child.

2. Government
It is the type of relations, when subordinate word is used in objective case. Subordinate word is usually a noun, and the head-word is a verb. These are the cases, when we learn the usage of the accusative case, when we should pay attention whether this object is animate or inanimate.

Читать (что?) журнал - To read (what?) a magazine.
Писать (кому?) другу - To write to (whom?) a friend.

3. Parataxis.
This is the notional relations between words. Here are often such words, which are not changed, as infinitives and adverbs.

Очень быстро - Very quickly.
Ужасно жарко - It is awfully hot.
Решение действовать - The decision to take action.
Поспешил ответить - He rushed to answer.

Understanding of subordinate relations helps to use words in correct grammar forms, to practise the declension of words in gender, number and cases. Also you start understanding the word order in sentences more clear.
