Adverbs of place. Adverbs of place with the questions «где» and «куда»

Hello, my dear student!

Today I would like to tell you about the adverbs of place. There are a lot of them in Russian, so you should know some and use properly in your speech or writing. Let’s consider them with examples and analyze the situations where we use them. You can often hear in speech such interrogative words as «где» [gde] and «куда» [kuda], and in answers – those important adverbs of place:

«ГДЕ?» [gd'e?] - where?

- Слева [sleva] - on the left
- Справа [sprava] - on the right
- Наверху [nav'irkhu] - above
- Вверху [verkhu] - above
- Внизу [vnuzu] - below
- Впереди [fpiridi] - in front
- Сзади [zadi] - behind
- За [za] - behind
- Здесь [sdes'] - here
- Там [tam] - there

- Скажите, пожалуйста, где магазин продуктов? [Skazhite, pazhalusta, gde magazin praduktaf] - Could you tell me, please, where is the grocery?

In this example you can see the interrogative word «где», thus the answer to this question will be some place or an adverb of place.

- Здесь, слева! [Zdes', sleva] - Here, on the left side.

The adverbs of place are «здесь, слева» in this question.

Let’s look at one more example:

- Извините, вы не знаете, где книжный магазин? [Izvinite, vy ni znaite, gde knizhnyy magazin?] - Excuse me, do you know where a bookshop is?

- Идите прямо, потом поверните налево и там будет здание книжного магазина. [Idite pr'yama, patom pavirnite naleva i tam budit zdanie knizhnava magazina] - Go straight, then to the right and there will be the building of a bookshop on the left.

As for the interrogative word «КУДА» [kuda?] (where?) – you can use such adverbs of place as:

- Налево [naleva] - to the left
- Направо [naprava] - to the right
- Наверх [naverkh] - going up
- Вверх [verkh] - going up
- Вниз [vnis] - going down
- Вперёд [fpir'ot] – go straight
- Назад [nazat] - backwards
- Сюда [s'uda] - to here, there
- Туда [tuda] - to there

Let’s consider these adverbs of place by examples in certain sentences:

- Куда побежала моя собака, я потеряла ее? [Kuda pabizhala maya sabaka, ya pat'er'yala eyo?] - Did you see where my dog went, I lost it?

- Она побежала вперед, потом повернула налево и убежала туда [Ana pabizhala fpir'yot, patom pavirnula naleva i ubizhala tuda] - It went straight and then turned to the left and ran there.

This example shows that we usually answer this question using adverbs of place, in our case – «вперед», «налево» and «туда».
