Verbs and phrasal verbs to do with Transport

The topic "Транспорт" [transpart] (transport) is very useful for the integrated study of several topics. Here you can learn not only common vocabulary but also the verbs of motion and get to know what prepositions we use in Russian word-combinations describing the usage of different means of transport.

Here is the basic dictionary (a range of verbs, prefixes and nouns on the topic "transport).

Ground and underground transport:
Велосипед [vilasip'et] - a bicycle, мопед [map'et] - a moped, мотоцикл [matatsikal] - a motorcycle, машина [mashina] - a car, автомобиль [aftamabil'] - an automobile, такси [taksi] - a taxi, троллейбус [tral'eybus] - a trolleybus, трамвай [tramvay] - a tram, поезд [poizd] - a train, метро [mitro] - a subway.
Ехать [y'ekhat'] - drive (заехать [zay'ekhat'] - stop in, выехать [vyikhat'] - drive out, подъехать [pady'ekhat'] - drive up, въехать [v'yekhat'] - drive in, приехать [priy'ekhat'] - arrive, отъехать [aty'ekhat'] - drive off).
Везти [visti] - transport (привезти [privisti] - bring, вывезти [vyvisti] - export, подвезти [padvisti] - bring up, отвезти [atvisti] - drive away, увезти [uvisti] - take away).

Air transport:
самолет [samal'yot] - an airplane, вертолет [virtal'yot] - a helicopter.
Лететь [lixt'et'] - fly (взлететь [vzlit'et'] - get off the ground, улететь [ulit'et'] - fly away, подлететь [padlit'et'] - fly up to, прилететь [prilitet'] - arrive).
Взлетать [vzlitat'] - to fly up, приземляться [priziml'yat'sa] - to land.

Water transport:
Паром [parom] - a ferry, теплоход [tiplakhot] - a motor ship, пароход [parakhot] - a steamboat, корабль [karabl'] - a ship, лайнер [laynir] - a liner, яхта [yakhta] - a yacht.
Плыть [plyt'] - sail (отплыть [atplyt'] - set sail, уплыть [uplyt'] - sail away, приплыть [priplyt'] - sail up, подплыть [padplyt'] - come sailing).

Here are some word-combinations with verbs. Please note what prepositions we use with one or another mean of transport and when we just omit them.

Ездить на велосипеде (мотоцикле, мопеде, машине) - Ride a bike (a motorcycle, a moped, drive a car).
Садиться на велосипед (мопед, мотоцкл) - Get on a bicycle (a moped, a motorcycle).
Садиться в машину (такси, поезд) - Get into a car (a taxi, get on a train).
Садиться на автобус (трамвай, троллейбус) - Take a bus (a tram, a trolleybus), зайти в автобус (трамвай, троллейбус) - get on the bus (tram, trolleybus).
Ездить на автобусе (трамвае, троллейбусе, поезде, метро) - Go by bus (tram, trolleybus, train, tube).
Водить мотоцикл (мопед, машину) - Motorcycle (drive a moped, drive a car).
Поймать машину (такси) - Hitch a ride (flag a taxi).
Припарковать машину (мопед, мотоцикл) - Park a car (a moped, a motorcycle).
Спуститься в метро - Take the subway. Сесть на станции метро - Get the subway station.
Ездить поездом - Go by train. Сесть на станции - Get the station.
Летать на самолете. Летать самолетом - Fly the plane.
Плыть на пароме (теплоходе, лайнере) - Go by ferryboat (motor ship, liner).

Слезть с велосипеда - Dismount a bicycle (a moped, a motorcycle).
Выйти из машины - Get off a car (taxi, tram, trolleybus, bus, subway).
Сойти с поезда - Get out of the train (get off the plane, motorship).

Note. It is possible to use different prepositions. Here is the difference:
Я на машине = Я еду на машине - I am driving a car.
Я в машине = Я нахожусь в салоне машины - I am in the vehicle.

Я на самолете = Я лечу на самолете - I am flying.
Я в самолете = Я нахожусь в салоне самолета - I am inside the plane.

Я на метро = Я еду на метро - I am taking the subway.
Я в метро = Я нахожусь на станции, в вагоне метро - I am inside a subway car.

We don't say "я в мотоцикле" (inside a motorcycle) or "я в велосипеде" (inside a bicycle). They don't have any cabin, that's why we use the preposition "на" [na].
