How to make an order or everything about food

Hello, dear student! Today we are going to discuss very "delicious" topic on food and main Russian dishes, to learn how to make an order and to memorize some new words.

Russian сuisine is one of the most diverse, people like our food for its diversity and accessibility. Due to our historical background, the East has influenced the Russian cuisine - it's connected with the fact that years ago Russia had a lot of republics, including Central Asian countries, that's why you can often meet families, who along with traditional borsch (борщ), cook pilaf (плов), manti (манты) and lavash (лаваш).

The Russian cuisine is rich in diversity of cereal dishes.

[Krupa] Cereals/groats - is food which we use to cook healthy porridges, for example:

Гречневая каша [Grechnivaya kasha] - Buckwheat - you can buy buckwheat everywhere but it would cost much more expensive than in Russia, because our country is its motherland and main place of manufacture.

You can also hear about such porridges as:

Перловая каша [Perlovaya kasha] - Barley porridge
[Ichmenaya kasha] - Barley porridge
[Babovaya kasha] - Bean porridge
[Manaya kasha] - Semolina porridge
[Risavaya kasha] - Rice porridge

[Ya ni lyubitel' kash, no lyublyu grechku, katoruju gatovit maya mama] - I am not a fan of porridge, but I like the buckwheat which my mom makes.

[Manaj kashij v Rasii korvyat malin'kikh ditej] - The babies are fed semolina porridge in Russia.

[Ya by ni atkazalas' at risavaj kashi] - I wouldn't mind to eat some rice porridge.

Our worldwide famous "борщ" [borsch] - borsch - can't go without "сметана" [smitana] sour cream - traditional relish for soups, porridges and pelmeni.

Several years ago "пельмени" [pil'meni] - meat dumplings - have also become famous; they are often confused with "манты" (manty), but dumplings are much smaller, cooked in boiled water and eaten with sour cream.

If you don't like meat dishes, you should necessarily taste "вареники" [vareniki] - vareniki - they are like dumplings but the stuffing is usually fr om potatoes, cherry or cottage cheese.

[Babushka Ana fsigda gatovit vareniki na zaftrak] - The old lady Anne always cooks vareniki for breakfast.

- I would like dumplings with sour cream, could you please give me one portion?

Одна порция [adna portsijya] One portion - is a certain amount of something, in our case, it's food. For example, when you visit a restaurant, cafe, bar or canteen, they have already divided dish into portions and every portion contains any amount of soup, porridge, borsch or pelmeni. There are standard portions, for example, one portion of borsch contains 300 grams. But every restaurant has its own rules, so do not be surprised, if you see on your plate this or that amount. To know the amount from the very beginning, you can ask a salesman or a girl at the cash register:

Скажите, пожалуйста, сколько грамм салата в одной порции ? [Skazhite, pazhalujsta, skol'ka gram salata f adnoj portsii ?] - Could you please tell me how many grams are there in one portion of the salad?

[V ekhtam tvorage sto dvatsat' pyat' gram] - The are 125 grams in this cottage cheese

Блинчики или блины [blinchiki]/[bliny] Pancakes - is a traditional Russian dish or more like a dainty. There is an official day in Russia, when you can meet people in the streets, who celebrate "Масленница" [Maslenitsa] - a popular fest, when people see off winter and meet spring. They usually make pancakes (блины) and treat all relatives, friends and acquiantances. Pancakes can be sweet, salty, you can eat them with honey (мед [myod]), caviar (икра [ikra]), sour cream or butter (масло [maslo]).

Another dainty that you can meet in Russia is "оладушки" or "оладьи" [aladushki] / [alad'i] fritters. We cook fritters in a pan with butter and eat with sour cream, jam or honey.

Варенье [varen'e] - kind of homemade jam from different fruits and berries - is a very tasty and sweet dainty, like jam, but we usually make this kind of jam at home, every Russian family has its own traditions of making jam.

[Malyshi ochin' lyubyat babushkina varen'e] - Kids are fond of granny's jam

[Na zaftrak ya pridpachitayu alad'i s malinavym vareniem] I prefer to eat fritters with raspberry jam for breakfast

[Skazhite, pazhalusta, gde kupit' bliny?] Could you please tell me wh ere I can buy pancakes?
